BoyleSports has reported that City Of Troy is the best backed horse in Breeders’ Cup history with the firm ahead of the Californian carnival this weekend.
The superstar three-year-old is now 6/4 to provide Aidan O’Brien with a maiden victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, as he bids to add a fifth Group One to his glittering CV.
O’Brien has fired seventeen darts at the race in the past, with Giant’s Causeway coming closest to victory in 2000, when finishing a neck behind dual-Classic winner Tiznow.
Galileo, Hawk Wing, George Washington and So You Think adorn the list of beaten Ballydoyle runners, but City Of Troy will enter stall three at Del Mar as one of the best backed horses in history to buck the trend.
As the bookies brace themselves for a colossal payout, Fierceness will front the challenge to stop a dream swansong for the favourite, and Todd Pletcher’s colt is just 4/1 to follow up his victory in the Travers Stakes.
City Of Troy is the sole European representative in the fourteen-runner field, but Japan mount a formidable challenge spearheaded by Kentucky Derby third, Forever Young (11/2) with Ushba Tesoro (12/1) rated another likely contender.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “City Of Troy has really captured the public’s imagination and he’s now our best backed horse in Breeders’ Cup history. It would be a fairytale ending on a brilliant career and that will soften the blow of what will be a record-breaking liability for us.”
