Tipperary star forward Jason Forde, like so many times before, was the Silvermines king when he scored 1-14 to see off a weak Templederry side in a fairly entertaining FBD Insurance County Premier Intermediate Round 2 hurling championship game at MacDonagh Park, last Saturday evening.

The probable All star operated on the forty all through the hour and the move from his customary centre back position (where he usually plays for the club) worked a treat with the red haired dynamo scoring his well taken goal in the 45th minute at a stage when it looked as if their dominance might be threatened after Templederry were on the verge of completing a comeback with former Tipp man Sean Ryan scoring a great goal a minute earlier.

Mines were worthy of their win and led 0-12 to 0-7 at half time after leading by seven minutes before half time but Forde’s goal had them 1-15 to 1-11 in front and the Blue and white dominated the last quarter outscoring the Kenyons 0-6 to 0-1 with Kenyons not helped by losing John Kennedy to a second yellow card in the 51st minute.

Mines now face Eire Og Anacarty in an all-or-nothing game, and their win was helped by a more careful display as Sean McGrath, Luke O’Brien, Ronan Sherlock, and Darragh McKelvey shone, with Noel Quirke and Darragh Nolan quietly efficient as they kept the Templederry attack to 1-6 from play.

Paddy Leamy, Conor McKelvey were others to shine, with Danny Quinn continuing to be an effective man on the edge of the square.

Quinn might not have it all his way when he was well marshalled by an evergreen Thomas Stapleton who grew better as the game continued, while Darragh Carey, Liam McCutcheon and Sean Ryan could not be faulted for their efforts as the Kenyons face the strong possibility of facing a relegation battle as they face a strong Boherlahan in their final game.

With four frees and a sideline ball, Jason Forde had five of his total accumulated in the first half along (four frees and one from play) with Mines other scores coming from Cathal Treacy and Danny Quinn before the ever present Paddy Leamy struck his third minor to make it 0-11 to 0-4 after twenty eight minutes.

Up to then, the Templederry four points had come from the stick of Eanna Murray (free), Colm Murray and Liam McCutcheon from play before Sean Ryan scored his second in the 29th minute.  Jason Forde responded with a brilliant sideline ball and as play entered additional time Templederry had time to see both Eanna and Colm Murray land a free each.

Silvermines were the better team but lapses of concentration almost cost them two goals when their short puckout policy almost came a cropper. Half-time Silvermines 0-12 Templederry 0-7.

Sean Ryan’ close-in free followed by Eanna Murray’s only score from play plus another Ryan score, helped ease Templederry back into contention. With Conor McKelvey very much on the ball, his ability to win frees earned Jason Forde the chance to convert two back-to-back frees as Eanna Murray and Forde traded more frees to make it Silvermines 0-15 Templederry 0-11 and seventeen minutes remaining.

Then, a minute later, the game received a major boost when a Templederry attack ended up in the Mines net after Sean Ryan scored when stealing possession from Luke O’Brien.

The teams had barely time to take in what happened when Mines were on the attack and suddenly Jason Forde was careering through the Templederry cover before sending a two-handed slam to the net. Two minutes later and Forde had increased his team’s lead after Conor McKelvey was fouled after catching Conor Murphy’s eighty metre puckout.

Eanna Murray replied with a 48-metre free in what was to be Templederry’s last score and eleven on the clock. At the other end Templederry goalkeeper Philip Kennedy produced a great save to deny Darragh Treacy.

That was the beginning of the end for Templederry as Mines were hurling comfortably and in the run into the end, Jason Forde hit four unanswered points, the first from play with the remaining three including two 65s either side of a close-in free. Full-time Silvermines 1-20 Templederry 1-12.
