The current Garda base on Emmet Street has long been deemed inadequate, with local representatives insisting that the facilities are no longer fit for purpose.
The new development will see the station relocated to the Kickham Barracks Plaza site, part of the multi-million euro regeneration project in the town.
Tipperary TD Michael Murphy has confirmed that building works are due to commence before the end of September. He was informed by Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan that all the preparatory steps have now been completed.
A preferred contractor has been identified, and the project’s final business case has been signed off by the Department.
Local concerns had been growing in recent months after the project failed to begin during the summer as initially planned. Councillors in Clonmel had called for greater clarity on the reasons behind the delays.
According to the latest timeline, construction is expected to take 27 months. The station is due for substantial completion by November 2027.
