Thurles Sarsfields and Tipperary camogie’s rising star Lucy Purcell has been honoured with a Bronze Scholarship in Mary Immaculate College’s Elite Sports Scholarship Scheme for 2024/25.
Well known locally for her rapid rise through the camogie ranks, she enjoyed a standout 2024 with the Tipperary minors, winning both the Munster Championship and the All-Ireland Minor Final, earning a Minor All-Star, and serving as vice-captain.
A former Ursuline Secondary School, Thurles standout, Lucy won Junior A Munster and All-Ireland titles in 2022 before adding back-to-back Senior A Munster Championships in 2023 and 2024.
She followed that up by helping Thurles Sarsfields to the 2025 Senior Club County Championship and has since joined the Tipperary senior panel for the 2024/25 season.
Now a first-year B Ed student at MIC, she is lining out with the college’s Ashbourne Cup team as she continues to build on her growing list of achievements.
Congratulating this year’s awardees on their achievement, Professor Niamh Hourigan, Vice-President of Academic Affairs at MIC, said: “I warmly congratulate this year’s MIC Elite Sports Scholars. As ever, the calibre of this year’s sporting ambassadors has been outstanding. Our talented awardees have proven their sporting excellence at inter-county, national and international levels, with two All-Ireland winners among them.
“They have also dedicated themselves wholly to achieving academic success at MIC, and balancing the two commitments is no easy task. So, we are delighted to offer our support to such worthy recipients.“
