Tipperary hurlers were prominent across several fixtures in the latest round of the Fitzgibbon Cup, with strong individual contributions at midfield, in defence, and in attack despite mixed results for their respective colleges.

MTU Cork secure quarter-final with strong Tipp involvement

MTU Cork booked a home quarter-final as Group B table-toppers following their 2-20 to 0-13 win over Garda College on Leeside, and there was notable Tipperary involvement on both sides.

Joe Egan of Moycarkey Borris lined out at midfield for MTU Cork and delivered a huge workload throughout the contest. With the game effectively won, Egan was withdrawn in the 54th minute. St Mary’s man Ruairí Leahy was introduced as a late substitute as MTU closed out a comfortable victory.

The Garda College, despite the defeat, fielded a strong Tipperary contingent. Goalkeeper Jason O’Dwyer of Clonoulty Rossmore was joined in the defence by Mark Carey (Nenagh Éire Óg), Johnny Mulqueen (Burgess), and Lorcan Carr (Knockavilla Kickhams). In attack, Robbie Stapleton of Thurles Sarsfields impressed with three points from play.

Maher battles at midfield in narrow DCU loss

There was Tipperary interest in DCU Dóchas Éireann’s 2-22 to 2-19 victory away to Maynooth University, with Tommy Maher of Thurles Sarsfields the sole Premier County representative involved.

Maher played the full game at midfield for Maynooth University, covering plenty of ground in a tightly contested encounter that was only settled by four late DCU points.

Heavy Tipperary presence as TUS Midwest fall to UCD

TUS Midwest endured a difficult outing in their 5-18 to 1-17 defeat to UCD, despite a significant Tipperary representation throughout the side.

In defence, Stephen Walsh of Moycarkey Borris, Andy Hoolan from Moneygall, and Robert Doyle of Clonoulty Rossmore all started, tasked with containing a UCD forward line that finished with five goals.

Further up the field, Kian O’Kelly (Kilruane MacDonaghs), Jack Leamy (Golden Kilfeacle), Seán Kenneally (Moneygall), and Paddy McCormack (Borris-Ileigh) were all named in the starting attack.

Leamy provided a bright moment for the Limerick side with a second-half goal, briefly keeping TUS Midwest in contention before UCD pulled clear late on.
