Homeowners should be given the same chance as vulture funds to buy their houses at discounted prices, according to Cllr Joe Hannigan.
He told Nenagh Municipal District Council that vulture funds, including one fund that had $37bn behind it, were buying up houses at 20 per cent of their value.
Tipperary County Council housing executive Clare Curley revealed that there were 771 applicants on the MDC's housing list and there was a need to turn vacant houses around as “quickly as possible”.
However, Cllr SeamusMorris pointed out that with only 35 houses due to come on stream, it would go no where near housing the 771 applicants.
