Silvermines Historical Society continues to mine its rich history

Silvermines Historical Society will launch its fifth local history journal, Mining the Past, in as many years in the Eagle's Nest, Dolla, this Friday, November 4.

The book will be launched by well known local historian, author and former teacher Danny Grace, a popular journal contributor in the past.   

The 2017 publication contains the writings of over 30 local contributors, covering a wide range of subjects.

Among the stories told is the life of Sgt Joseph Gaynor, who lived in Dolla Garda station in 1938, as well as the account of Det Sgt Matthew McLoughlin from Foilnadrough, Kilcommon, and a valued member of the staff of Field Marshal Kitchener, who perished with Kitchener on the HMS Hampshire in June 1916.

Other stories tell of A family of Survivors – The Kennedys of Poullanorman and their connections to Thomas Francis Meagher, an article extensively researched by Paddy Ryan, Malahide and formerly of Killeen.

Winning the Sweep, Going to the Creamery and Cart-Makers in Silvermines parish are some some of the other topics covered.

Of the many photos, the most notable one, captured by Donal Quinn, is members of SHS in Kilmainham Gaol, on a special day trip to Dublin on April 30, 2016.

Mining the Past is priced at €10, ,and, neeedless to say, it will make a great Christmas gift for anyone who has associations with the parish. It will be available on launch night and afterwards in local shops and bookstores.
