Successful Upperchurch Walking Weekend

The yellow rainfall alert for southern counties turned out to be little more than a mist in Upperchurch as the hundred plus walkers took to the road on the opening Friday night to kick off the twelfth Walking Weekend on Friday 17th November. Neither did a small amount of excess moisture deter the Saturday morning participants from facing into the hills and valleys with vigour and enthusiasm. Anyhow they all got back.

Likewise the Saturday afternoon walkers quickly learned to enjoy the mud and puddles as they splashed their way round the three later walks. The livelier ladies and gents were still well up to hopping and leaping at the subsequent set dancing session.
Sunday turned out bright and airy and a perfect day for walking. Almost 300 took part in the three walks starting in Hollyford, Borrisoleigh and Upperchurch as well as the 5 km Fun Run. The Borrisoleigh to Upperchurch walk had novelty value and was quite testing in parts as was the longish Hollyford-Red Hill walk. A last minute delay due to a minor hitch with the cooking facilities only augmented the enjoyment of the stew on offer for the walkers.

Off the trails, as well as the set dancing, there were the usual traditional music and singing sessions. The experimental Culture Night was very enjoyable also, despite clashing with the big soccer match on TV and other events. Thanks to all who took part. Thanks also to the volunteers, indoors and outdoors, who helped the event run so smoothly. The organisers would especially like to thank the landowners for their generous cooperation.

The next big walking event in Upperchurch is the Christmas Night Hike which takes place this year on Sunday Dec. 17th starting from Upperchurch village at 6.30 p.m.
