Irish sports stars of tomorrow from across 12 counties, including three from Tipperary, have had their talent and hard work recognised with UCC Sports Scholarships for the 2022-2023 academic year.
The three from Tipperary are Riain Quigley and Sean O'Connor, both from Clonmel, who have received Gaelic football scholarships, and Darragh Stakelum from Thurles, who is honoured in hurling.
A total of 82 students across 17 sports, hailing from Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois, Limerick, Sligo, Tipperary and Waterford have been awarded, with the recipients named at the launch of the 22/23 programmes at the UCC Sports Grounds in the Mardyke Pavilion.
The UCC Sport Scholarship programme aims to support athletes to achieve their full potential and is divided into two main strands - the UCC Team Sport Scholarships and the UCC Individual Sport Scholarship.
Through the scholarship programme UCC students, including 16 First Year recipients, will be supported to develop and progress in their journey as talented athletes and meeting their academic goals through the UCC Sport Performance Programme.
The purpose of UCC Sport’s performance programme is to support UCC teams and athletes perform to their full potential.
The programme is tailored for UCC’s sports scholarship students and the university’s elite teams and athletes performing at top level sport in third level sport in Cork, Munster, Ireland and internationally.
