Garda checkpoint on busy Carlow motorway yields multiple arrests and vehicle seizures

AN GARDA Síochána conducted a thorough checkpoint operation on the M9 this Tuesday morning, resulting in several arrests and vehicle seizures.

During the operation, a total of 473 tests for intoxicated driving were carried out.

From this number of tests, two individuals were taken into custody on suspicion of drug driving.

In addition to the arrests, the checkpoint saw the immediate seizure of 13 cars under Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act. 

Inspector Ronan McDonald, commended on the collaborative efforts of the Gardaí involved in the checkpoint. He said: "The primary purpose here is obviously road traffic enforcement."

"Also a dual aspect of through to this checkpoint is the primary disruption of criminals using the major road networks around Ireland."

He also added that gardaí were making the routine stops to ensure vehicles are "winter ready" with tyre thread checks.

The inspector's underlying message was: "We want people to get home safely to their loved ones this Christmas."
