BREAKING: Woman injured in knife attack in Limerick while protecting partner

A KNIFE attack occurred in Limerick city where a female got injured while trying to intervene is being investigated by gardaí, Limerick Live reports.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, May 15, around Chapel Lane in the city centre. 

A couple were walking when they were approached by two young men on bikes.

“One of the youths and the male got into a verbal altercation,” said Sergeant Natasha Walsh, Henry St garda station. 

“The second youth who was wearing a hat, came towards him brandishing a knife and attempted to stab the male in his right ribcage. The female attempted to intervene and was subjected to a cut on her right cheek and above her right lip.”

The pair fled the area on bicycles, as a large crowd reportedly gathered. 

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this assault to contact them at Henry St on 061 212 400.

“Unfortunately, an aggravating factor in this case is that a knife was used. There is zero tolerance for knife crime here,” Sgt Walsh continued. 

“In recent years An Garda Siochana has employed numerous successful strategies to reduce knife crime. Some young men believe that carrying a knife could protect them but the opposite is true, frequently the knife is taken from them and used against them.”

Saying “even a small knife can cause a dangerous wound,” Sgt Walsh warned that “carrying a knife can put you in jail”. 

“You don’t have to injure somebody, and simply being found in possession of a knife is a crime for which you could be arrested,” she said.
