LATEST: Contract signed for major Tipperary realignment project

Tipperary County Council has announced that a contract has been awarded to Wills Bros Ltd for the construction of the R498 Latteragh Realignment Scheme.

The scheme involves the improvement of a 4.3km section of the existing R498 Regional Road between Nenagh and Thurles, at Latteragh, approximately 7km south-east of the M7 Nenagh Bypass.

RPS Group Consultants were employed to carry out the detailed design and will supervise the works on behalf of Tipperary County Council.

This scheme represents an investment of approximately €35m which is being provided to Tipperary County Council by the Department of Transport.

The new road cross-section will be a single carriageway with a shared footway/cycle track along the length of the scheme.

The existing three junctions will also be improved as part of the scheme.

Access to all properties will be maintained throughout the 18-month period of the works.

Works of this nature will cause some disruption, but it is the intention of Tipperary County Council and our contractor to minimise this as far as possible.

Liam Brett, Director of Services, Tipperary County Council, stated that: “This is a significant scheme and investment in roads infrastructure in Tipperary which will bring safety, economic, and environmental benefits with enhanced linkage between the north and south of the county. The scheme supports government plans and policies in relation to transport and spatial development in the Mid-West Region”.

Sinead Carr, Chief Executive, Tipperary County Council, signed the contract and said: “The Council has been working closely with the Department of Transport to bring this project to construction. I am delighted that the Council has now awarded this contract and I look forward to works commencing in the near future”.

John Carroll MCC, Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council stated that: “The road re-alignment scheme at Latteragh is a significant investment in the region. The R498 is the most direct route from Nenagh to Thurles and Clonmel. This scheme will serve to enhance this link by reducing journey times and improving road safety”.

Tipperary County Council advises that Traffic Management will be in place from time to time for this project to ensure the flow of traffic, and will keep the public notified through regular communications on www.tipperarycoco.ie and on social media.
