The Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Jim Daly, was in Nenagh last week to visit St Conlon's Nursing Home care facility.
Deputy Daly visited the facility and the site for the new St Conlon's home at Tyone on the invitation of local Labour TD Alan Kelly.
"I was delighted that Minister Daly agreed to visit Nenagh and St Conlon's nursing home and view the location for the new nursing home on a 3.5 acre site beside the hospital,” said Deputy Kelly.
Deputy Daly met director of nursing Fiona Rigney; head of social care HSE Midwest Paschal Moynihan, the staff and the patients the home.
At the new site for the nursing home, he met Joe Hoare, assistant national director estates, who showed Deputy Daly and Deputy Kelly the plans for the new home.
“While I was a Minister in the previous Government I was delighted to be in a position to announce over €9m funding for a new state of the art 50-bed facility for the new St Conlon's nursing home beside the hospital. I subsequently worked with the HSE to purchase lands close to Nenagh Hospital,” said Deputy Kelly.
He said that the new facility will not just double the bed capacity of St Conlon's but will also provide a range of other services, including badly needed respite and rehabilitation beds and facilities.
“The home's proximity to the hospital will greatly benefit the residents of the nursing home with the co-location allowing for patient treatments more seamlessly,” he said.
The final design plans for the new nursing home are being concluded at the moment and the HSE will then be applying for planning permission.
