€500,000 funding approved for new community centre

Fr. Michael Burke House in Gladstone Street, Clonmel is to get €500,000 in funding, allowing it to be converted into the community facility Place 4U, according to Tipperary South Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for State, Martin Mansergh.

The funding will go towards the conversion of the vacant convent and chapel into a multi-purpose facility that will incorporate a youth cafe, a centre for older people, meeting room facilities and space for the provision of essential services to a broad cross-section of the population.

The funding is being provided under the Government’s Rural Development Programme.

“This is a major boost to the local community in Clonmel,” said Minister Mansergh. “There has been a strong local push to secure funding for this development and now that it has been allocated we can look forward to a fantastic community facility being put in place.

The premises were vacant and there is a lot of potential for their conversion. Once the work is complete the building will be far more beneficial to the people of Clonmel and give them an excellent resource right on their doorsteps. It will be a good location for the young people in the area to meet up and socialise. It will provide a space for the older people of the community to meet up with their friends and neighbours. It will also provide a good space for many other local clubs, societies and organisations to congregate.

I’m delighted that this money has been allocated as I have been discussing this matter with the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs for some time. My hope is that the approval of this grant will lead to work beginning on the conversion quickly. That way we will soon have a tremendous community facility available to the people of Clonmel,” Minister Mansergh concluded.
