Go-Ahead For Major Templemore Retail Development

AN Bord Pleanala has given the green light to a a major retail development at Patrick Street, Templemore.

AN Bord Pleanala has given the green light to a a major retail development at Patrick Street, Templemore.

The development at 13-18 Patrick Street by Cllr Joe Bourke includes a 14,000 square foot supermarket, residential units and car parking. It will involve widening the laneway at number 18 to allow for vehicular access. The frontages from 13-18 Patrick Street will be replaced with a single new shopfront. The design work was carried out by Clonmel architects WO Morrisey and Son.

Templemore Town Council had given the proposal the go-ahead in May 2009, but that decision had been appealed to An Bord Pleana by Eurospar, C/O Tom Duffy Architects, Grafton Street, Dublin, and Michael Condon and Peter Kennedy of Patrick Street, Templemore.

Granting permission this Monday, the board said that the development would be in accordance with Templemore and Environs Development Plan, with local and national and retail policy and would not adversely impact on the architectural character of the area.

Overturning the decision of its own inspector not to grant permission, the board said that it had regard to the revised design, the town centre location, that the redevelopment was an appropriate town centre redevelopment and that the development would not exacerbate flooding of properties in the area.

The decision was welcomed by Templemore councillors at their June meeting on Monday night.
