Nenagh councillor Virginia O’Dowd has called on the Minister for Jobs and Enterprise, Richard Bruton, to ban low cost selling. Cllr O’Dowd had a motion before this Monday’s North Tipperary County Counci urging legislation on the issue to protect small retailers and local food producers.
“This arises from the situation last Christmas when multinationals launched a price war on fruit and vegetables,” she told the council. She accused the big chains of “luring people into their stores with cheap fruit and vegetables and hiking up the price on other items”.
She said she wanted to see local shops protected as there were the “lifeblood of our town centres”,
The motion was seconded by Cllrs Seamus Morris and Mattie Ryan.
