Cllr Joe Bourke’s motion for free Saturday parking for Templemore, sparked a lively debate at this month’s meeting of the Town Council.
“Business is tough at present, even long established businesses are finding it very hard to survive.
When pay-parking was introduced, I believed it was good for the town. It gave the Council much needed revenue. But times are different now, and money is not as freely available now as it was back then. I believe the only way we can gain an upper hand over neighbouring towns, is to ask for free Saturday parking. 15 minutes free is good, but we need to go a step further.” Cllr Bourke said he had not “costed the fallout” for the Council’s budget, but added: “We are giving the business of Templemore an opportunity to restructure their busines s around Saturdays.” Cllr Bourke stressed that he had not been lobbied on the issue by any group.
