This week Foroíge held their regional entrepreneurship competition in the Thurles Chamber of Enterprise Centre.
The event included young people from schools across the county and on the day eight finalists were shortlisted to present to a panel of judges, including John Kennedy manager of the Enterprise Centre, Lisa Kavanagh, Youth Officer for the ETB and Eric O’Brien Regional Manager for Foroíge. Some of the businesses presenting on the day included Purple Cloud who custom design shoes and trainers, MAK designs who recover fallen trees and turn the timber into salad bowls and candle stick holders; also we had Fudge Anonymous who develop and produce their own variety of fudges.
The winners on the day were Tom & Danes Kitchen from St Joseph’s school in Clonmel, who produce savoury jams and chutneys with their range including red onion jam, sweet pepper chutney and a vine tomato and chilli chutney, all of which had the judges wanting more. Tom (17) said: “it was a great experience to stand in front of the judges and I’m looking forward to Dublin”. Foróige’s Youth Entrepreneurship Programme, (NFTE) is a cutting edge, world recognised, youth entrepreneurship education and development programme. NFTE is committed to changing the lives of young people in communities by enabling them to develop core skills in business and enterprise, and in doing so helping them to unlock their individual talents and potential. NFTE operate in-school and out-of-school programmes, both of which have been shown to be successful in building self-confidence and interpersonal skills in young people as well as increasing school completion and college attendance rates.
Both Tom and Dane will now go on to represent Tipperary at the NFTE national finals held in the Mansion House, Dublin on May 11th where they will compete against other young people from around the country for the title of NFTE’s Youth Entrepreneur of the year, the winner of which will go on to compete against other European countries where Ireland has won the last two years. The programme is seeking local entrepreneurs who might have time to participate in the programme as a business volunteer.
