John Stewart and his wife Cathi travelled from Baltimore, USA, on a visit to Templemore recently.
John is a brother-in-law to Albert Guerin, whose grandfather William (late of John’s Lane, Bank Street, Templemore) emigrated to the US in the 1920/30’s.
John and Cathi, together with the late Albert and his wife Anne, have an interesting bond with Templemore as over the years they have contributed a large amount of money to the Athletic Club in Templemore through group fundraising efforts in Baltimore for worthy causes.
The money John says was mostly earned through the sale of ‘Champ’ or what we call ‘colcannon’, which sold like ‘hot cakes’ at regular weekend local fundraising events.
Albert Guerin suggested that the development of the Athletic Track was a deserving cause and so the cheques arrived.
Over ten years a sum of €25,000 was lodged in the club’s bank account. This money enabled the fledgling club to complete projects with reduced borrowings and to draw down Govt grants.
When Albert died the group asked that instead of flowers, donations should instead be made to Templemore Athletic Track Republic of Ireland.
All of these donations were received most gratefully by the club.
In recent times a plaque was erected at the clubhouse in recognition of this group’s generosity.
John and Cathi were most impressed when they visited the Athletic Track and were astounded at the facilities available to the people of Templemore. They were delighted they were associated with this huge development in the town.
The couple stayed with relations Buddy and Nora Guerin for the two weeks and travelled to many places of interest throughout Ireland. They loved their time here and are arranging to return sooner rather than later. They hope to have the late Albert’s wife Anne Guerin accompany them on their next visit.
