Last Saturday evening Dundrum was the venue for the last event of the County Road Championship 2012 series with the County Road relays titles down for decision. The entry was well down on previous years and this may be due to the fact that it was the last event of the season. Normally this event started the Road season and as such was well supported by all the Clubs. This is something we need to keep in mind when planning next year’s road season fixtures.

In the ladies race over a relay of 800m, 1500m, 800m and 3000m the Clonmel team of Cliona Doyle, Aine Roche, Fiona Barlow and Angela McCann went into an early lead which they held all the way to win convincingly in 22 mins 11 secs. Dundrum quartet of Patricia Ryan, Mary Keane, Mairead O’Connor and Dymphna Ryan finished strongly to win the Silver medal in 23 mins 2 secs. The Bronze medals were won by the Clonmel team of Valerie Connolly, Norma Sorohan, Rhona Boyle and Regina Burke in 28 mins 35 secs.

In the Men’s relay over 800m, 1500m, 3000m and 500m the Dundrum quartet of Michael Ryan, Kevin Moore, Martin Keane and John Shanahan made every stride a winning one when coming home convincing winners in 33 mins 25 secs. Thurles Crokes team of Dylan Grant, Declan Doherty, Denis Shanahan and Shane Mullaney won the Silver medals in 34 mins 47 secs. The Clonmel team of Niall O Ceallaigh, Evan Egan, Brian Looram and William Maunsell won the Bronze medals in 36 mins 7secs. The Gold medals in the B Section were won by the Dundrum team of Conor Moore, PJ Holmes, William O’Dwyer and Donal Keane in 36 mins 35 secs.

At the Presentation of Medals the County Chairman, Billy Purcell thanked Dundrum for hosting these Championships. Indeed he thanked all the Clubs that came forward and help promote the County Road Fixtures; such support is very much appreciated by the County Board.
