Last weekend Clonmel competed in the first regatta of the 2014 season at Neptune Regatta in Island Bridge, Dublin.
This regatta was an all Ireland event with clubs from north and south of Ireland in attendance. To win at this regatta is a fantastic achievement for Clonmel rowing.
The majority of our crews had never competed at this 1200 meter long regatta, where the course includes a number of bends to navigate and makes racing even more challenging. All races are two boat races (similar to the Oxford/ Cambridge race), which means that crews have to row in multiple heats to take first position and a gold medal.
Clonmel had fourteen crews competing at Junior 14, 15, 16, 18 and senior events.
The club had two scullers entered in the men’s Junior 18 event and after beating their various individual opponents ended up facing each other in a Clonmel versus Clonmel final. Given the standard of crews present this was a fantastic achievement and congratulations to the scullers and their coaches.
The winner was Stewart Channon over Sean Lonergan.
Ladies rowing is very strong in Clonmel and we saw some fantastic results from our ladies crews. Ailish Redmond is the lead coach for the ladies crews. Ailish is a champion Irish oarswoman who was trained in Clonmel by Jimmy Fennessey, the current head coach and Club President.
In the Women’s Junior 16 single scull, Jade O’Malley Adair navigated the course really well and won each heat and the final to take the gold medal for Clonmel. Jade has put in a lot of hard work during winter training, which is now paying off.
Tara Cooney and Jade O’Malley Adair won the third Clonmel gold medal of the day in the Junior 16 Double scull category. This was a fantastic race where the girls dominated from the start of the race.
In the men’s junior 15 double scull James O’Donnell and Jason McKenna rowed well, but after a good row lost out in the last 500 meters.
The club crews racing were: Men’s Club 1 1X – Ryan McKenna. Men’s J18A 4X-Jake Anderson, Chris Britton, Liam O’Donnell, Hugh Kinsella. Men’s J18A 1X – Stewart Channon, Sean Lonergan: Men’s J16 4X+ Cavin Fox, Conor Sunderland, Daire Lynch, Chris Lumley, Mark Bates (cox). Men’s J16 1X – Chris Britton. Men’s J15 4X+ - Sean O’Donnell, James O’Donnell, Matt Dundon, Jason McKenna, Mark Bates (cox). Mens J15 2X – Matt Dundon, Aaron Flynn, and Jason McKenna, James O’Donnell. Mens J14 2X – Sean O’Donnell, Mark Bates. Women’s J16 2X – Jade O’Malley Adair, Tara Cooney. Women’s J15 4X+ - Katie Sutcliffe, Abbie Conway, Keeley O’Reilly, Aoife O’Farrell. Women’s J15 2X – Keely 0’Reilly, Aoife O’Farrell
The parents, club members and crews would like to recognise and thank the coaches Jimmy Fennessey, Ailish Redmond, Pat Kinsella, Sham Anderson and Susan Kavanagh for their dedication to the club and crews. Thanks also to Dermot Wall for getting our boats safely to the event and for all of the support during the event. Our next event is the Skibbereen Regatta held over two days at the National Rowing Centre in Farranwood, Cork on the 12 and 13th of April.
