Clonmel road race on St Stephen’s Day

The Clonmel 4 mile Road Race takes place in Clonmel on St Stephen’s Day at 12 noon.

This race has grown in stature over the years and is now firmly fixed on everyone’s calendar over the festive season.

This race over a good course caters for all levels of abilities and all ages.

This year’s prize list is as follows: the winner will receive €150.

This year there will be prizes for the following categories, Men: 1st 5 Men, 1st 2 0/40, 0/45, 0/50, 1st 0/55, 0/60, 0/65, 0/70 and 1st 2 Junior Men.

The list of prizes for the Ladies is as follows: the 1st 5 Senior Ladies, 1st 2 0/35, 0/40, 1st 0/45, 0/50 0/55 and 1st 2 Junior Ladies.

There will also be some great spot prizes for down the field finishers, so come along and participate in a great event. The entry fee is €10.

Last year’s race was a brilliant success with 397 athletes competing with the host club very well represented right throughout the race. The race was won by Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers in 19 mins 17 secs with Kevin Maunsell (Clonmel) 2nd in 19 mins 33 secs, Sean Tobin of (Clonmel) 3rd in 19 mins 36 secs, William Maunsell (Clonmel) 4th in 20:03and Michael Carey (Clonmel) 5th in 20:06.

The Ladies race was won by Angela McCann Clonmel in 23 mins 30 secs with Aine Roche (Clonmel AC) 2nd in 25:20 with Marie Fitzgibbon (Thurles Crokes) 3rd in 25:35, 4th was Suzanne Shine (Clonmel AC) in 27:53 with Claire Devitt (Dundrum) 5th in 28:52.

This year’s race will start close to the Loreto Convent and proceeding down to Sir Thomas’s Bridge via the Colville Road and Kilganey. At Sir Thomas’s Bridge it will proceed over to Ferryhouse where the athletes will turn left at the Bulmers Roundabout and back to Clonmel to finish close to Barlo Motors on the Davis Road. The Vocational School at the Mall is the race headquarters and entries will be taken there from 10 am onwards. There will be post race refreshments in the school.
