At the All Ireland Novice Cross Country Championships last Sunday, in the Ladies race Clolnmel’s only representative was Catherine Rice who ran well in such trying conditions with the County team finishing 6th.
In the Men’s race the Club team was severely depleted by the late withdrawal of Michael Carey through injury. Michael had geared himself well for this event as it was on this ground that he won the Munster Boys under 19 Cross Country title last year.
After the initial charge Sean Tobin moved into the chasing pack after 800m and from there he tracked every move. Going out on the final lap Sean was 20m adrift of the leader, Andrew Connick of Ferrybank and he gradually reeled him in. As they came down the hill before embarking on the final lap Sean was on the leader’s shoulder and made his winning move as he went 10m clear at the bell. Sean maintained this strong tempo to come home a very worthy Champion in 19 mins 23 secs.
Sean becomes the first club athlete to win this coveted title and is also the first county man to win this title since Athletics Ireland was formed in 2000. This is also the first time that a Club member won an All Ireland Senior adult Cross Country title. This brilliant performance by Sean also spurred on his team mates and none more so than Niall McCormack who really dug deep over the final 2 laps to move up through the field and even had the strength to withstand a late challenge to finish a very creditable 17th.
William Maunsell also ran his best race in these Championships when finishing strongly in 32nd place. We also saw very good performance from both Declan Curley and Derek Nolan. The performances of Sean, Niall and William played a major role in the County team winning medals at this level for the 1st time ever, when finishing 3rd County. The Club team finished a very gallant 7th out of 24 Clubs.
