Moyne village played host to the County Novice B Road Championships last Sunday where athletes had to contend with strong headwinds.

In the Ladies 3k a group of four athletes went to the front right from the start, with the wind at their back and they included Rebecca Doocey (Clonmel), Aine Doocey (Fethard), Frances Long and the eventual winner Brigid Gleeson, both representing the host Club.

These four athletes were still together at 1k and also as they turned at halfway for home. Then as they approached the 2 km mark Brigid and Frances upped the pace that saw them pull clear of Aine and Rebecca and from here to the finishing line they matched one another stride for stride and it was only very close to the finishing line that Brigid edged in front to win her first County title in 12 mins 48 secs with Frances winning the Silver medal one second adrift, great performances by both athletes.

In the battle for the Bronze medal Rebecca edged in front with 500m to go and she kept that tempo going all the way to win the Bronze medal when finishing strongly in 12 mins 52 secs with Aine Doocey finishing 4th in 13 mins 12 secs.

Then we had Ger McDonald of Clonmel also running well when finishing 5th in 13 mins 48 secs with her club mate Deirdre Healy finishing 6th in 14 mins 54 secs. Breda McNamara of Moyne also ran very w ell when finishing 6th in 14 mins 15 secs and along with Brigid and Frances won the Gold medals and retained the Moyne Cup for another year. The Clonmel team of Rebecca, Ger and Deirdre won the Silver medals on 14 points. The Bronze medals were won by the Moyne team of Catherine Dunne 10th (14:41), Rosie Cleere 11th (14:15) and Ashling Maher 12th (15:04).

In the Men’s race an entry of 28 athletes went to the start. With the strong headwinds a group of ten athletes set the early pace and this group stayed together as they passed through the village. Then as they approached 4k a group of four athletes went clear and they included the eventual winner, Donal Keane of Dundrum along with his club mate Colm Bradshaw, Paddy Cummins of Moycarkey Coolcroo and Dermot Logue of Coolquill. The race finish this year was in the village and with 1km to go Donal Keane increased the tempo and went clear to win the title convincingly in 20 mins 50 secs, great running.

The tussle for the minor placings was decided inside the last 200m with Dermot Logue of Coolquill holding off the fast finishing Colm Bradshaw of Dundrum to win the Silver medal in 21mins 5 secs with Colm winning the Bronze medal in 21 mins 7 secs.

For the record 4th Paddy Cummins (Moycarkey Coolcroo) 21 mins 8 secs, 5th John Russell (Coolquill) 21 mins 14 secs, 6th Sean McGrath (Dundrum) 21 mins 24 secs, 7th Ross Alexander (Coolquill) 21 mins 34 secs, 8th Paudie Coen (Dundrum) 22 mins 1 sec, 9th Gary Grant (Clonmel) 22 mins 12 secs and 10th Liam Shanahan (Thurles Crokes) 22 mins 21 secs. In the team event with three to score Dundrum were the worthy winners of the Premier Cup on 14 points with Donal, Colm and Sean, last won by them in 2010. The Silver medals were won by the Coolquill trio of Dermot, John and Ross while the Bronze medals were won by the Moyne team of Jody Sweeney 11th (22:56), Richard Daly 14th (23:09) and Damien McDonnell 15th (23:09) on 40pts beating Clonmel by one point. 5th were Moycarkey Coolcroo on 53 points with Moyne’s 2nd team on 67 points.

The County Chairman, Billy Purcell, at the Presentation of the medals thanked the Moyne Club for once again promoting two great races and he thanked the Ladies committee for the Post Race refreshments.
