Nenagh was the venue last weekend for the Munster under 14 to under 19 Indoor Championships. Pride of place must go to Sean Tobin who further enhanced his reputation as one of the Club’s finest athletes with a superb performance. In the Boys under 19 1500m final he took up the pace right from the start and set a very strong pace that saw him pulverise the rest of the field with a brilliant run. He ran a superb race to win the title very convincingly in a new Championship record of 3 mins 53.98 secs, well inside the 2006 record of 4 mins 9.90 secs. This was Sean at his best and he can now look forward to the All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championship in Galway this weekend with great confidence. Michael Carey was 4th, James Murphy 5th and Evan Egan 6th and they also ran very well.

These Championships got off to a great start for the Club when Alan Boland won his first Munster individual medal when winning the Boys under 14 Silver medal in the Walk. In the Girls under 15 60m Phoebe Murphy won the Gold medal convincingly while Chloe Lynch also performed very well when winning the Girls under 15 Munster Walk title. Saoirse McGeever also had a great weekend opening her 2012 season in style when winning the Gold medal in a very good Girls under 16 Hurdles final. She also ran a great race in the Girl’s under 16 60m sprint final when 4th. In the Boys under 16 Patrick Cleary ran two very good races when finishing 4th in both the 1500m and 800m finals, in the latter he set a PB. In the Girls under 17 Roisin Cleary ran a brilliant race in the 800m to win the title in style with Megan O’Brien also producing a great performance to win the Bronze medal. In the 1500m Orlaith Moynihan ran a great race to win the Munster title and should look forward to the All Ireland School Cross Country Championships with confidence. Two other athletes who should also look forward to these Championships with confidence are Aoife Laste who won the Silver and Laura Tobin who was a close 4th in this 1500m race. In the Girls under 18 800m Clare Horgan ran well to win the Bronze medal.

Other athletes who performed well over the weekend and who put in some great performances included Aaron Dwyer, on his Munster debut, in the Shot Putt, Lorraine Doyle in the Sprints, Myles Crosbie, Michaela Crosbie and Maedbh Moynihan in the 800ms and Reece Maher in the 1500m.

Road Race Series

The Club is once again promoting the Annual Inter Firms road races. This year the races gets underway on Wednesday, March 28 at 6.15pm with a practise run over the route while the event itself gets underway on Wednesday, April 4, 11 and 18. Then on Wednesday April25 we hold the Annual handicap race. Now is the time to be organising your team of five athletes with the best three performances to count each night. The first three races will see athletes predict their time each night when they enter and then they run the course without a watch. This sort of competition allows every athlete to set their own pace and regardless of where they finish in the race they can all help their team to win the competition. For further details please contact Niall O’Sullivan at 086 1660888.

Annerville 10K - May 13

This summer classic takes place again this year over a very good course, a course that is ideal for people who want to run a Personal Best. The race will start outside the Vocational School, The Mall and proceed down the Waterford Road to Bulmers Roundabout where the athletes will turn right and over Sir Thomas’s bridge and then right again along Kilganey, the Colville road, the Raheen road, the Old Bridge, turning right at the Dungarvan Road Roundabout and right at the Traffic Lights at Irishtown and finish under the West Gate. There are just nine weeks to go to this Classic and this is an ideal event for people to raise funds for local charities as this event caters for all levels of fitness abilities, from walkers to joggers to runners, all are welcome to participate at their own level.
