Community Games

The County finals of the Community Games Gymnastics competition took place in the excellent facilities of Moyle Park Sports Complex, Lisronagh last week.

Ninty two competitors competed overall from various areas throughout the county, some hoping to win the coveted county title and a place at the HSE Community Games National Finals next August while others were quite young and this was new to them but all definitely enjoyed taking part, having fun and making new friends.

Participation in this sport is increasing all the time.

Kayleigh Flannery from Clerihan won the under 10 girls event for the fourth successive year. This was a great achievement. Kayleigh replaced her leotard with football gear on Saturday morning as she is a member of the Clerihan U12 girls football team who qualified for round two defeating Fethard.

Karine Blair, New Inn and Siobhan Murchan, Kilsheelan both completed a hat trick winning the under 12 and under 16 events respectively, landing three gold medals in a row. Karine also won silver in 2009

Norma Kennedy from Cahir won the girls under 14 event while her sister Eilish won bronze in the under 16 event.

Siobhan Murchan and Lorna Ni Cheallaigh, winner of a silver medal under 16, are both members of the County Tipperary ladies football team and manager Biddy Ryan was spotted among the spectators supporting many young ladies in addition to her granddaughter, Cathy, who was representing Ardfinnan. We are looking forward to seeing Lorna in action again in the swimming event this weekend.

Liam McGrath, Clerihan who won a gold medal four years ago eventually got his second gold medal this year. Liam made a habit of breaking bones for the past two years in the weeks leading up to the competition.

Thanks to Co-ordinator Martin O’Keeffe, Judges Andrea O’Keeffe and Christine Brunnock, Gym coaches Majella Hewitt-Forte, Karen Morrissey and their teams who all worked hard on a long day.

Special thanks to the Moyle Park Committee, especially Pat and Joan O’Connor and family, who did tremendous work preparing for the event, sorting refreshments and leaving everything ship shape and to Anne Quinlan, Area Secretary.
