The L.J. Ryan Cup, with monthly medal, was won by William Maher with a fine round of 41 points. Details: Wm. Maher (11) 41; P.J. O’Dowd (12) 39; A. Ryan (6) 37; gross. K. Kennedy (plus 2) 37; Ml. Carey (19) 37. The C.S.S. was 34.
William, a notably strong player, shot seven pars to the 9th for 21 points and six more the rest of the way for 20 and a clear cut success. P.J. O’Dowd had 18,21 with a useful three at the 15th. Young Aaron Ryan continues to impress with good gross returns. Three over to the turn he “doubled up” the 10th but showed fine resolve to go level to the 18th, which he birdied. Kieran Kennedy’s gross again led that category, he was one under for the round with a nice 34 for the second nine. Michael Carey’s 19,18 took fifth prize.
The Thursday Open Singles resulted: B. Manning (17) 38, Slievenamon, B. Callanan (12) 37; M. Kennedy (4) 35; gross, K. Kennedy (plus 2) 37. Visitor Barry Manning had 17,21 despite a zero at the 18th. He had ended the first nine with a similarly pointless 9th but pars from 12th to 15th steadied him for a strong back nine and a worthwhile trip to Turtulla. Brian Callanan, lately in good form, had 19,18 with three pars out and four on the way home. Mark Kennedy had a five over round highlighted by a three at the 17th. Kieran’s first nine gross was all 4’s and 3’s for 33 shots. He dropped a couple to the finish but was again top in the gross sector. The C.S.S. situation was one of “reduction only” and no increases, testimony to the difficulty of the conditions.
As with the Bruen Shield so with the Purcell. We’d lost to Ballykisteen in the former and had no better fate at Carrick-on-Suir in the other on Saturday afternoon. Hosts Carrick had been soundly beaten in the morning by Ballykisteen, so obviously we were up against strong opposition. Jimmy Phelan and Jack Looby were our only winners in the five matches. Ger Ryan and Ml. Bracken were next best with a “called in” half, Martin Fahy and Thomas Quigley had no luck in losing at the tie-hole, while Ballykisteen prevailed over Brian Callanan-Donal Hurley and Stephen Quigley-Joe Clohessy by narrow margins. Next on the Union rota are the Mixed Foursomes at Cahir Park on 15th June. A Central Towns match with Templemore was due this Wednesday (4pm) details next week.
The 1st round draw in the Bray O’Brien Cup is as follows: D. Kenny v D. Maher; Wm. Maher v P. Coote; B. Fallon v J. O’Dwyer;
J. Fanning v J. Kerrigan; J. Callanan v P. Murray; N. Curley v D. Corcoran; E. Hughes v B. McCormack; J. Corbett jr. v D. Maher. Entries are sought for Club Championship, Club Foursomes and Novices Cup.
Friday Mixed Foursomes: L. Barrett (17), M. Ryan (26), M. Duignan (27) 43; E. Egan (27), A. Dunne (33), B. O’Grady (36) 40,
T. Maguire (9), P. Russell (22), P. Kirby (28) 40.
