Seapoint 23 Cashel 32

Cashel travelled to the South County Dublin Club of Seapoint on Saturday last. The match was played at the unusual time of 4pm on good ground and the travelling supporters were in for a decent game of rugby. Kevin Quinlans hat trick of tries and Brendan O’Connors pushover provided the elusive bonus point.

The match wasn’t all Cashels way though and even though they went in at halftime in the lead, the massive boot of the Dublin side out half saw Seapoint go 5 points clear at one stage in the second half.

Good teamwork was to prevail and sitting 5th place in the league is a good place to be for this team in early February.

U17s Cashel 22 Clonmel 10

Cashel had a good league win over Clonmel last Sunday. The lighter Cashel lads struggled against the giant Clonmel forwards going five nil down after ten minutes. Cashel on limited possession always looked dangerous and scored two well worked tries by Peter Gavin and James O’Halloran one of which was converted by Ryan O’Donnell.

A totally different Cashel came out for the second half gaining parity at scrum time and dominating the lineout. Two more tries a second for James O’Halloran and one by the outstanding James Walsh followed.

Clanwilliam had the kick off in the first half into a light breeze. Cashel set up their first ruck from this, and the ball went through their hands to Cashels Full Back John Ryan who from the half way line, was unstoppable and scored our first try. This was converted by Ryan O’Sullivan. Clanwilliam put pressure on straight away from the re-start but Cashels’ Fly Half eased this with a long kick down field with Harry Tobin chasing like he was Simon Zebo. We were strong in this attack and Ryan O’Sullivan finished this move carrying the ball over the line. Cashels pack was working hard to get to the breakdown quickly with numbers piling on the pressure. Our back row worked well with Patrick O’Dwyer at no. 8 supported by wing forwards of Harry Tobin and Fearghail O’Donoghue. Ryan O’Sullivan kicked a penalty to pull the score

to 15-0.

Clanwilliam opened their scoring from an intercepted pass catching Cashel off guard to bring the score to 15-7. Just before half time Cashel increased the intensity and with a scrum 5 yards short of the Clanwilliam line, Kevin O’Connor our Scrum Half supplied an excellent ball for our attacking back line. With intelligent play

from our mid field pairing of Joshua O’Dwyer and Brian O’Connor, John Ryan finished off the move with Ryan O’Sullivan converting.

The 2nd half was an even affair with good passages of play from both sides. Cashels concentration lapsed briefly and Clanwilliam narrowed the gap with a fine score leaving the score board reading 22-14. The last score came from an individual effort from Cashels Fly Half jinking through a series of opposing players. Ryan O’Sullivan also converted this to leave the final score at 29-14. Cashels front row of Ricky Lambe, Tom Dowling and Matthew Hewitt scrimmaged well. Jack Riordan and Jack Ryan Con were steady as usual at second row. Stephen Walsh and Tom Clarke were exciting attacking wingers. Our three replacements can be proud of their contributions, Eoghan Murphy, Gavin Clancy and Aidan Maher. Over all this was a fine performance from our Cashel boys. Well done to our coaches of Donal Clancy, Willie O’Dwyer, Tony O’Sullivan and Brendan O’Connor on this Under 13 outfit.
