Cashel lose out after a fine performance

Clanwilliam 17
Cashel 19

Clanwilliam 17
Cashel 19

The result reflects this game of open fast rugby. Clanwilliam started the better, scoring a try in the opening 7 minutes. Cashel were on the back foot for the opening 15 minutes with some fine defending on show. It was not until the 15th minute that Cashel ventured into their opposing half and our boys picked up the pace of play. Ryan O’Sullivan playing at fly half made a break just outside their 22 and was just stopped yards from the line. We rucked the ball quickly, for our lock forward of Patrick O’Dwyer to pick up and drive for the line. This opened our scoring and Ryan converted for Cashel to lead 5 - 7 at half time.

The first 18 minutes of the second half saw some of the finest rugby this team have ever played. There was a real sense of urgency about their play. Both backs and forwards had a mission of breaking the gain line at every opportunity. Our two mid field duo of John Ryan and Joshua O’Dwyer punched gaps in the opposing back line. Our forwards were outstanding with Tom Dowling playing hooker, propped by Matthew Hewitt and Rickie Lambe. Both second rows of Jack Riordan and Jack Ryan were very stable and our back row of Eoghan Murphy, Harry Tobin and Patrick O’Dwyer were covering some ground. We played with great continuity driving forward at every opportunity. Kevin O’Connor playing scrum half supplied great ball to our back line and also varied this play by being very opportunistic venturing on the blind side from scrums. From one of these moves Ryan O’Sullivan scored Cashel’s second try and also converted. With the score now 5 - 14, our boys piled on the pressure. From open play just outside our 22-metre line, Brian O’Connor passed to John Ryan to bullet past Clanwilliam defence to score in the corner. We failed to convert leaving the score 5 – 19.

With only minutes to go Clanwilliam rallied together and piled on the pressure. Cashel responded well but Clanwilliam punched gaps in our defence to score 2 late tries, but only succeeded in converting one. In the dying minutes of the game with the score 17 - 19 Matthew Hewitt, our loose head prop who was having an outstanding game pulled off a superb tackle yards from our line to save the day. The Ref blew the final whistle to our relief!

Our subs did very well, with Gavin Clancy and Fearghail O’Donoghue playing well when introduced onto the pitch. Oisin O’Suilleabhain made a great debut at full back when introduced for Niall O’Dwyer. Both Niall and our wingers of Tom Clarke and Brian O’Connor displayed moments of magic, jinxing, passing and ball carrying taking on the opposition at every turn. Over all this was a very exciting game

of rugby. This now leaves Cashel in a healthy position on the league table, just waiting other results to see whether we finished 2nd or 3rd on the table. Compliments to our hosting club Clanwilliam and all parents who travelled to support on the day.

U15s played Clanwilliam in stodgy conditions. It was a well fought game in which Cashel produced one of their better displays. It was a full fifteen performance where everyone contributed and they ran in a number tries. A good victory, which will allow the team to kick on for the rest of the season. Training next Friday at 7pm.
