Two-goal hero Mick Mackey secured Cashel Town B a remarkable sixth successive Shield title after overcoming Donohill & District by the odd goal in three in the Shield Division 3 Final staged at windswept Palmers Hill Park, Cashel last Sunday.
Cashel Town B playing into the wind saw Mackey heading over in the opening minutes. Donohill & District, winners of Shield Division 4 last season, came close to opening the score when Ger O’Neill’s shot was tipped over the crossbar by Cashel ‘keeper Gearoid Slattery and from the set-piece Gavin Browne cleared for another corner-kick.
On 17 minutes, Cashel broke the deadlock when a speculative shot from 20 yards by Mackey slipped through the hands of unfortunate Donohill net-minder Paul Crowe.
However, the lead was short lived because three minutes later Donohill got a deserved equaliser. Good approach play released Thomas McLoughlin and he found Joey Shanahan who kept his composure to beat Gearoid Slattery from close range.
The Cashel defence and in particular goalkeeper Gearoid Slattery produced vital interceptions to stave off a Donohill side that were growing in confidence, but with Cashel hanging on it looked it was going to be all square going in at the half-time interval.
But it was not to be, because on 43 minutes Gavin Browne’s centre into the Donohill penalty area saw a defender misjudge the flight of the ball allowing goal-poacher supreme Mackey get his outstretched foot to the ball and poke it home from about three yards out to make it 2-1.
On the resumption Cashel using the route-one tactic as the a wind began to get stronger saw the Donohill ‘keeper Paul Crowe making vital stops from Thomas O’Neill and preventing Mackey from completing his hat-trick.
Mackey was a constant threat from the high balls into the opposition penalty area and it took a well executed tackle from Michael O’Neill on his own goal-line to deny the burly striker from scoring as the hour mark was reached. With Cashel continuing to turn the screw Mackey saw his direct free-kick being pushed to safety by Paul Crowe and the ‘keeper did likewise to stop Eddie Walsh from extending Cashel’s lead.
However, it was not one-way traffic as this game remained on a knife-edge right up to the final whistle. Donohill applied the majority of the pressure over the final fifteen minutes and only a number of brave headers especially from Darren Redmond and a crucial save by Gearoid Slattery from a John McGrath header in the dying minutes saw Cashel Town B hold on to lift the Shield Division 3 crown.
For the record Cashel Town B side’s Shield successes to date came in Division 4 in 2007/08, Division 3 in 2008/09, 09/10 and 2012/13 with back-to-back success in Division 2 in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
