Walsh double puts Carrick United into FAI Junior Cup last 64

FAI Junior Cup

Carrick United 2 Ferrybank 0

The premier squad continued their remarkable record of reaching the last 64 of the national cup every season bar one since 2004. This game won’t go down amongst the great Carrick FAI junior cup ties, but in cup football a win is a win.

Keith Walsh got both goals, one in each half, to seal a deserved win. Michael Clarkeson will be first to admit that he should have found the net during the opening half. While in control the home side should have put more daylight between themselves and Ferrybank long before Keith’s second. Ferrybank had a wonderful opportunity to equalise mid way into the second period, a miss that woke the home side from their slumber. In the last 64 Carrick travel to Fermoy or Glin Celtic.

Under 11 B League

Carrick United 4 Tramore 1

Good display from both teams on Saturday last. Tramore were very strong in attack which kept our backline on their toes. Our two centre backs Tommy and Jay did very well in keeping their strikers at bay while Pete Keane was called upon a number of times to pull off some great saves. Captain for the day Anthony Power and Michael Cody supplied some great through balls for striker Mark McCoy.

Finally the deadlock was broken just before half time when some great link up play between Evan Hanrahan and Karl McCoy saw Leon Kennedy slot the ball home. We nearly doubled our lead moments later when Mark McCoy hit the crossbar. The second half saw a number of changes to the team. Jack Walsh replaced Mark up front, Jamie Cronin slotted in right back in replacement of injured Anthony Power and Sean Purcell replaced Karl in the centre of the field. Again Pete Keane was called on to make a number of saves but Tramore where rewarded with a goal early in the second half after a great move. Lorcan Walsh and Celab Shortis came on and they had a huge impact on the game. Lorcan strengthened our backline greatly which allowed centre back Tommy O’Hanlon to push up into the midfield. Celab Shortis had a huge impact on the game as he set up both Sean and Mark in quick succession to give us a 3-1 lead which was then added to again with a great free kick by Karl McCoy to seal the win at 4-1. Great display by all players and we hope this is the first of many wins to come.

Under 11 A League

Southend 2 Carrick United 2

A strong display from the squad at Southend. The boys came from 2 down to gain parity and a share of the spoils

Under 15 A League

Carrick United 3 Ferrybank 5

A very disappointing day for all involved with this squad. Having found themselves 3-1 up in the first half Carrick took their foot off the pedal. The boys got very sloppy, this coupled with a never say die attitude from Ferrybank and some poor decision making proved costly, Carrick going down to their second league defeat of the season. Lessons must be learned from this defeat and hopefully all the lads will keep their heads up and come back strongly next time out. Scorers were Brandon O’Sullivan (2) Sam Grace (1)

Under 12 Girls League

Cappoquinn 0 Carrick United 7

The girls continued on their winning ways with an impressive 7-0 victory over Cappoquinn, a team that have been doing very well in their league campaign. We travelled with a squad of 20 players as 2 matches had been arranged. However only the league fixture took place and all the squad contributed to this significant win. Captained by Niamh Duggan who added to her scoring tally with striking partner Angela McGuigan bagging two goals to add to her impressive scoring rate, Emma Norris, Leah McGuire and Niam Martin scoring a goal each in either half. Both Leaha and Anna Walsh playing in midfield stopped any potential goal scoring opportunity that Cappoquinn had and with the ever growing strength of our defensive line of Zoe, Kate and Siobhan and goal keeper Emma we gave Cappoquinn very few chances to score. Substitutions that saw Rebbecca Wells, Lorna Butler, Hazel McFadden, Aoife Tobin, Caithlinn Hallinan, Caitlin Twomey, Charlotte Norton and Amy O’Sullivan continued with the great play that saw Carrick Girls U 12 remain at the top of their league.
