Carrick won 4-1 on penalties

Carrick advanced to the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup and an away meeting with holders and favorites Sheriff Street from Dublin. This was an intriguing compelling encounter that was in the balance all afternoon.

Carrick began well, both Ian Clery and Lee Grace going close with long range efforts. Carrick had the home side in trouble when they kept the ball on deck but the Limerick boys’ size gave them superiority in ariel battles. The game was on a knife edge at the interval and the second half continued in the same vein.

Ian Clery had the game’s best opportunity but his chipped effort was held by the keeper. Gerry Walsh went close near the end, his shot zipping the wrong side of the post. Tussles were fair but whole hearted with the soft conditions causing both teams to tire as the 90 minutes came to a close. Twenty minutes of extra time failed to separate the teams. Thus penalties followed and once again International Junior player of the year Adrian Walsh was the Carrick hero saving two of the home side’s efforts then steping up to slam the fourth penalty home to give Carrick victory. Ian Cleay, John Murphy and Alan Cody were the other successful takers.

This was a hard slog against a good home side and all the boys ran themselves to a stand still and deserved their victory.

Congrats to Premier player Glenn Keane and his partner Karen on the birth of their son last Saturday night.

After going behind for the first time this season, Carrick produced a stunning second half comeback led by Mikey Ryan and a Danny Pledger hat trick. This gave Carrick a win against a resilent Piltown side. Carrick are unbeaten in 13 league games with 12 wins and a draw, enough to be crowned League Champions.. They will now focus on going unbeaten and a tilt at the Infirmary Cup.

This squad has put in lots of years of hard work to get to this point. The standard/quality of the training asked by mentors Brendan, John, Paul and Stephan has being increased considerably and the players have responded with hard work and great numbers attending every week. Competition for places haas keen and the results on the pitch speak for themselves. Congratulations to all concerned.

Carrick United 6 Ballyduff 0.
Following last week’s heartbreaking defeat in Arklow the lads bounced back with an emphatic win. Forced into some personnel and positional changes Carrick took a few minutes to settle. Sam Grace’s smart turn and finish found the net to open the scoring and settle the team. Luke Kiely added another super goal to his catalogue with a stunning 25 yard free kick. Man of the match Dean Walsh added the other 4 goals, his third was a truly special effort as he nutmegged his marker on the half way line, beat another defender and finished into the far top corner from 30 yards.
