Following thousands of votes, hundreds of nominations, ten finalists and an expert judging panel, there could only be one winner of Goodall’s Best Scone 2013 and it could only be Niamh’s restaurant in Clonmel.
Owned by sisters, Niamh and Paula Dwan, Niamh’s submitted its most popular pear and almond scone for judging. Creating a decadent take on a traditional recipe, customers travel from far and wide to sample the scones, which are overseen by pastry chef at Niamh’s, Mary Pyke, who has been with the café for 12 years. Paula Dwan, joint proprietor at Niamh’s Cafe said is was amazing to have the scones recognised nationally. “Scones are intrinsically Irish and baking an excellent scone is all about the composition and belief in that only the best will do. The recipe that we use has been passed down from generation to generation and we’re thrilled that a traditional Irish recipe, albeit with a decadent twist, has taken the overall title of Best Scone 2013,” she said.
