Over 250 of Ireland’s cycling elite will descend on Clonmel at the end of June next year for the National Cycling Championships, which will be held over four days. Clonmel Cycling Club is delighted to be hosting such a prestigious event and thrilled to be promoting Clonmel on the national stage, while also bringing a welcome financial boost to the local economy. The championships are run over a four-day period, starting on Thursday evening and continuing through to Sunday, with five events taking place. These include the male and female time trials, run on the evenings of Thursday and Friday. The road racing events will take place on Saturday and Sunday, with the women’s and veterans (40+) events being run on Saturday and the showcase men’s elite race on Sunday. It is currently the only event that provides Ireland’s top professional cyclists the opportunity to compete on home soil, with the reward being the coveted white and green shamrock jersey.
As a precursor to the National Championships the club will be running a 25 mile time trial event on the course to be used in 2012. This event will provide the opportunity for cyclists to test themselves against the clock in advance of 2012. The course is pan flat and runs on the old Dublin to Cork road from Cahir to Kilbehenny, where riders turn and race back to Cahir. Sign-on will be outside Morrison’s Garage on the Cork road, Cahir at 7 pm on the evening of Thursday, 7th July.
