Clonmel Credit Union League Division 2
ROSEGREEN RANGERS 4 GLEN VILLA 2
A double from veteran striker David Brabston helped Rosegreen Rangers secure promotion from League Division Two after overcoming the challenge of fellow promotion candidates Glen Villa in Rosegreen on St. Patrick’s Day.
After taking maximum points from their Friday night visit to Tipp town to end promotion contender St. Michael’s B hopes, Rosegreen knew victory against Glen Villa would secure them promotion and also end Glen Villa’s hopes. Rosegreen got off to the ideal start scoring after just 4 minutes when David Brabston was brought down in the box and from the resultant penalty; Trevor Downey made it 1-0. Rosegreen made it 2-0 after 22 minutes when a quickly taken free-kick by Trevor Downey found Eoin Byrne and he in turn set-up Adrian Gleeson who found the corner of the goal.
Rosegreen continued to apply the pressure after the changeover and made it 3-0 on 51 minutes. From a David Byrne pass, it saw David Brabston show all his experience as he weaved his way pass two despairing tackles before placing the ball out of the reach of the ‘keeper. The busy schedule and energy sapping conditions of playing two matches in three days began to take their toll on Rosegreen as they allowed Glen Villa gain a foothold. A volley from 25 yards by Bernard O’Brien on 61 minutes gave Glen Villa a glimmer of hope. It looked like Glen Villa get something from this game when a Jason Collins direct free-kick left just a goal between the sides after 81 minutes. In a nail-biting climax to this game David Brabston kept his cool as he made it 4-2 from a Sean Cormack pass to give Rosegreen Rangers the three points and secure promotion.
ST. MICHAEL’S B 1
ROSEGREEN RANGERS 3
Rosegreen Rangers came from behind to end St. Michael’s B hopes of a quick return back up a division and in the process kept own hopes alive in this top of the table League Division 2 clash under the lights of Cooke Park, Tipp town last Friday night.
Rosegreen opened well and had two early chances both put over the bar from David Butler and David Cullen. Keith Bourke with an opportunist shot from 12 yards gave St. Michael’s B a 8th minute lead after good work from Brian Glasheen and Dean Thompson. The lead was short-lived as Rosegreen drew level straight away when Sean Cormack shot home from 20 yards. Rosegreen had a good spell pinning saints back with their strength and pace. David Cullen missed a one-on-one with John Keating on 38 minutes and a Keating clearance deflected off Eoin Byrnes and went just wide before Darragh Browne gave them a deserved half time lead on 43 minutes.
Rosegreen had set a strong pace and couldn’t maintain it as the intensity dropped and Saints came back into the game with John O’ Brien having a shot cleared off the line and having a shot saved for a corner-kick from a Dean Thompson pass. Saints did not drive on allowing Rosegreen came back with a series of chances before Eoin Byrnes wrapped up the points on 83 minutes scoring from twelve yards from a David Butler pass.
This result ends St. Michael’s B dream of a quick return back up a division, but it keeps Rosegreen Rangers hopes of promotion and a possible championship alive.
