Golf for Africa
The club is running our fourth annual Golf for Africa charity weekend on the 26th and 27th October. This year the funds raised will go to the Presentation Sisters in Fethard for their Mission School in Zimbabwe.
All prizes are donated, so please contact Dinny Burke, Pat Slattery and Brendan Kenny if you want to donate some prize you won or some unwanted gift you have.
The competition is an 18 hole stableford singles and we will have men’s, ladies and a junior section. Golf can be a very selfish game at times. On this occasion, you can be very unselfish by donating and playing in this competition for some of the poorest people in the world. We have had huge numbers for the past few years and we are hoping for the same this year.
Very little news this week because it was so quiet after the Ladies Day. The only fixture is a 14 hole 3 Ball Champagne Scramble on Sunday and Tuesday next. You can pick your own partner with one score to count on each hole except the 9th and 14th holes where all scores count. Usual tee box times on each day. There is an ongoing 14 hole monthly competition for October.
The Junior coaching is on Saturdays at 1.00pm. All juniors are welcome to attend and the coaching is by our professional Suzie O’Brien. New members are always welcome.
We had a very successful outing on Monday last to Thurles Golf Club with over 30 members taking part. Everything went great on the day with good weather, beautiful food and the course in perfect condition, we will definitely be back.
The team of Dave Forrest, Tony Lonergan and Michael W O’Mahoney were the winners with 86 points. Eighty three year old John Fitzpatrick played a blinder for his team in helping them finish second with the same score, just getting pipped on the back nine, Young Brian McNally and David Nye made up the team. The team of John Beckett, Tony Falvey and Tom Phelan got third place ahead of Tony Condon, Billy Phelan and John Fitzgibbon when they both finished with 84 points.
Spare a thought for Daniel O’Connor who started the season with a 19 handicap but is now playing off 11 after featuring in some of our major competitions recently and the “exceptional score reduction” feature by the computer that came in over the past year or two. Daniel doesn’t mind a bit and is delighted to be able to lose shots and is a great example to some of our younger members who like to hold onto theirs.
The team of John Ryan, Thomas Phelan, John Beckett were the winning team in last Wednesday’s Rumble competition with 92 points. The team of John Fitzpatrick, David Nye and Leonard Devine were second with 87pts and the team of Jim O’Brien, Tony Falvey and Ray Carthy finished third with 87pts.
Please note that the seniors meet every Wednesday morning with a draw for partners at 9.30am and the competition starts at 10.00am sharp. All members over 55 and their friends are welcome. The Seniors are going extremely well and we would always welcome new members to join us.
Our last outing of the year will take place in early November. The course and date to be decided.
Bridge & Whist
If you would like a game of bridge in a friendly atmosphere, why not come to our weekly game on Monday nights at 7.30pm. All are welcome and you do not need a partner; just come along. Heather has started her Whist lessons on Wednesday nights, so if you want to learn how to play whist or just to come and enjoy a night out, come along at 7.30pm.
The Fairways Restaurant at Slievenamon Golf Club is open for group bookings; menus and prices can be tailored to suit your needs. We cater for all occasions such as Birthdays, Parties, Funerals, Conferences and Weddings etc.
We have a special offer for new members to the club; this is €325 (including GUI & ILGU affiliation fees) for 2014. We also have a student membership for €130. Contact the club on 052 6132213.
