The Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling final had a nail biting finish but in the end Loughmore Castleiney held on under extraordinary pressure to clinch their third title on Sunday last at Semple Stadium with a 1-17 to 1-16 victory over a gallant Nenagh Éire Óg side.
Congratulations to Loughmore Castleiney on their great win and well done to Nenagh also on a courageous battle.
County Chairman, Sean Nugent, presented the Dan Breen Cup to victorious captain Ciaran McGrath. Noel McGrath won the Man of the Match award which was sponsored for the 25th time by John Quirke Jewellers of Cahir. Our thanks are due to John for his generosity over so many years. In a unique double, Noel emulated the achievement of his father, Pat, who was Man of the Match when Loughmore Castleiney won their first title 25 years ago.
Loughmore Castleiney will play Limerick champions, Na Piarsaigh, in the AIB Munster Club championship quarter final at Semple Stadium on Sunday October 27.
BALLINA WIN FIRST COUNTY INTERMEDIATE HURLING TITLE
There will be celebrations on the Tipperary side of the Shannon as Ballina won their first ever county intermediate hurling title with a 3-12 to 0-20 victory over Moyne Templetuohy. As with the senior final, this was a nail biting finish and the width of the post was all that prevented a battling Moyne Templetuohy side from earning a draw. Congratulations to Ballina on securing a great win and well done too to Moyne Templetuohy for their contribution to a fine game. County Vice Chairman, Michael Bourke, presented the Jacksie Ryan Cup to victorious captain, David Hickey, who gave a rousing address.
The John Quirke Jewellers sponsored Man of the Match award went to Ballina centre back, Thomas Collins.
Ballina will play Dromin-Athlacca or Knockaderry of Limerick in the AIB Munster club intermediate hurling quarter-final on Sunday October 27 at a Limerick venue.
LOUGHMORE CASTLEINEY 1988 TEAM HONOURED
Uniquely on county hurling final day the club that won the title also had a team of the past honoured. The Loughmore Castleiney team which won the county title in 1988 were introduced between the Intermediate and Senior games by County PRO, Ger Ryan. They were entertained at a reception in the Dome before the games and attended a dinner in their honour at the Templemore Arms Hotel afterwards. Thanks are due to the Templemore Arms and the Tipperary Star for their sponsorship of the event and to the Loughmore Castleiney club and the organising committee for making all the arrangements to make the event such a success. One of the unique aspects of the day was the photograph of the 1988 and 2013 teams which was taken on Sunday night in the Templemore Arms. It will surely be a GAA collector’s item.
