Stephen Holohan’s wonder goal seals it for Glengoole

Glengoole United 1 – 0 Peake Villa

Glengoole United 1 – 0 Peake Villa

This game had important repercussions on both the top and the bottom of the Premier League table, with both sides desperately needing wins for opposite reasons.

Peake Villa needed success to keep within touching distance of the title race, while the home side needed the points to get away from the bottom of the table.

Peake won the reverse of this fixture by three goals on the opening day of the season, but since then Glengoole have adjusted to the pace of the top division and were a much different prospect on Sunday at home.

Right from the start the home team were attack minded, and carved open the Villa defence to make the first clean chance after only a quarter of an hour. And they were rewarded for doing so, when Stephen Holohan scored a wonder goal by cutting in from the right hand side, and unleashing an unstoppable shot to the top right corner of the Villa goal.

The home side maintained this advantage to the break despite some good efforts from the Thurles visitors.

The second half was almost a mirror image of the first, with again the home team having the best of the early period, albeit this time they were unable to add to their lead. Peake again took control of the closing stages, and had the home team pinned back into their own half for most of the last 15 minutes but again, were unable to convert any chances, and so surrendered three valuable points to Glengoole.

The result means that Glengoole climb away from the bottom of the table into fifth place, while it makes the mountain Villa have to climb if they are to have any influence in the title race, even higher.
