Knockavilla Kickhams pipped Knockshegowna by a point, 1-17 to 0-19 after extra time in the County JHC ‘A’ semi-final replay at at Templetuohy on Saturday
Paul Breen proved the hero for the Kickhams as the second half substitute belted over three superb points from play in extra-time to force his side into the county final against Moycarkey-Borris. The West men led 1-7 to 0-6 at the break, the goal from Killian Loughman in the 15th minute and good point scoring from Conor Horan and Brendan Ryan. It was tit for tat throughout the second half, Kickhams holding the advantage for most of it but Declan Costello putting the North side ahead close to the finish before a Tommy Comerford point forced extra time, 1-12 to 0-15.
It was level again at the extra time interval, 1-14 to 0-17, the Kickhams points from Brendan Ryan and Paul Breen.
With the wind in their favour, Kickhams dominated the second half. A Tommy Comerford ’65 put Kickhams back into the lead before Paul Breen hit another rousing score with five minutes to play. Colin Browne responded with a point but Breen drove over his fourth point from play. In injury time Declan Costello saw a 21-yard free saved by Kickhams ‘keeper Thomas Ryan and although Eamon Murphy scrambled over a late point Knockavilla survived.
