Villa’s cup hopes ruined by Richie Ryan double

Clonmel Credit Union Tipperary Cup 2nd Round

Holders St. Michael’s brushed aside fellow Premier League outfit Peake Villa to advance into the last sixteen of the Tipperary Challenge Cup at the Tower Grounds, Thurles last Sunday.

Villa, who were hoping to put on a show, were facing an uphill battle as early as the 5th minute when Richie Ryan broke the deadlock when he raced into the box and scored. With Villa failing to stamp their authority on proceedings ‘keeper Graham Loughman kept them in touch, producing a top- class diving save to prevent the visitors from doubling their lead on the half-hour mark. But a minute later a rampant St. Michael’s made it 2-0 when Richie Ryan again broke through the Villa cover before firing low past the outstretched hand of Graham Loughman.

Villa pulled a goal back a minute before the break, albeit against the run of play, when a well delivered free-kick by Ian Barnes saw the inrushing Alan Leahy head home.

With renewed optimism Villa piled forward after the changeover in search of an equaliser and they came close on the hour mark when Mickey Coleman’s shot skimmed the upright and then Saints net-minder Derek Breen did well to stop Noel Kent scoring. But that glimmer of hope was extinguished after 75 minutes when St. Michael’s were awarded a penalty for handball and the always reliable Irish amateur skipper James Walsh made no mistake from the spot. St. Michael’s put this game to bed when Villa failed to clear their lines, allowing Michael Maguire to score right on the stroke of full-time.
