Division 5: Clonmel 1 Blackrock 2

On a sunny October Saturday the Clonmel Division 5 team lined out on their home grounds Rockwell for their second match of the season to meet the new team in the division Blackrock, who were promoted directly to Division 5.

The game was most definitely on from the first whistle, with both teams fighting hard. Midfielders Aine O’Dwyer, Monica Ryan, Mairead Morrissey and Nicola Magill played out of their skin to help the hard-working backs Laura Ryan, Andrea O’Dea, Gillian Lynch and Pam Corcoran, who were feeling the pressure of the Blackrock attacks.

Blackrock scored first and were soon awarded a penalty flick that was impossible for goalie Rachel Lonergan to stop to put them 2-0 ahead. The Clonmel girls fought hard for a deserved goal and Pam Corcoran and Marie Mulcahy were extremely unlucky not to score from a number of short corners.

Late in the second half the hard work by the girls up field paid off when the Blackrock goalie was left stunned by Marie Mulcahy’s strike on goal. Alas Clonmel ran out of time and made their way, defeated, to Ollie’s for some of Andrea’s famous chocolate biscuit cake!

Thanks are extended to all the supporters, especially the injured Ger Boland who helped the team along with her words of wisdom from the sideline and Kate O’Sullivan for stepping in as umpire at the last minute.

Everyone at the club wishes Therese Brennan the very best on her wedding to James Duffy this weekend; and congratulations to Aisling and Paul Fanning on the birth of their baby Charlie.
