The club’s juniors gave a great display of grit and character in overcoming a lively Ballingarry side in their opening game of the South Championship in Kilsheelan on Sunday last. In the game the old adage of goals winning games rang true as Commercials ran in four goals and this was the real difference between winning and losing. Goals from Fergal Condon, Eoin Leahy, Paul Wynne and Paudie White secured the win in a game where old heads were greatly helped by some young legs.
Leading by 7 points at the break the team faced a stiff breeze but with great determination they held on. Ballingarry to their credit battled bravely and indeed but for some poor shooting could have won this game. Franny Kelly, who played in a South senior final at the same venue all of 34 years ago, chipped in with three points, while the final goal of the game came from Paudie White who has yet to graduate from the minor ranks. The final score was Commercials 4-6 to Ballingarry 0-11.
The Intermediates had to give way to a very impressive Carrick Swan side in the second game of the afternoon. Battling bravely all afternoon the side brought the game to The Swans and were in the game right up to the final minutes. Under severe pressure for long periods, Commercials had chances in the second half to get something from the game but wayward shooting cost us. Despite the defeat the Intermediate side can still have a big say in this championship. The Score was Commercials 0-7 Carrick Swans 1-9.
U-8 and U-10 Girls
A large turnout of girls and parents brought a great atmosphere of fun to The Sportsfield on Monday, 6th May as teams from Fethard, Kilsheelan, Moyle Rovers and Cahir joined Commercials under 8s and 10s for a blitz. All teams gave a great account of themselves and the organisers are to be praised for their efforts.
With five games running at a time the whole blitz ran smoothly and was run off in two hours. Refreshments were supplied by the parents and we thank them for this. As the sun shone brightly the sight of parents and children sitting on the grass enjoying the refreshments between the action was a welcome change form the harsh conditions that have been tolerated to date this year. The club thanks the players and officials from the visiting teams.
Thanks to Gerry Burke, Paddy Bond, Sandra O’Callaghan, Pat Concannon and Tom O’Gorman who organised the blitz and continue to do wonderful work with these teams.
