In the first semi-final of the South Minor A Hurling Championship Kilsheelan/Kilcash upset the form book by beating favourites St.Mary’s by 0-14 to 0-12 in a great game in Monroe on Sunday last.

St. Mary’s started brightly but hit a couple of wides before Kilsheelan/Kilcash opened the scoring with points from Brendan Martin and Eoin Kehoe, before St.Mary’s replied with a point from Ross Peters. The teams exchanged points equally until 5 minutes before half-time, when St. Mary’s got the upper hand and raced into a 3-point lead at the interval, 0-9 to 0-6.
At the start of the second half St. Mary’s opened a 5-point lead after 10 minutes. But from there to the finish, with Eoin Kehoe and Martin Gibbs taking control of midfield, Kilsheelan pushed forward and went 2 points up with three minutes to go.
St. Mary’s tried hard to force the goal they needed but the Kilsheelan Kilcash defence dealt capably with everything that was thrown at them to come out on top.
St. Mary’s were bitterly disappointed but have to admit that they met a team that was far hungrier. Kilsheelan Kilcash will be thrilled to get to a south final and with a good few players from their U-16s - who won the South B Final on Friday night - will face either Carrick Swans or Moyle Rovers in the decider.
