Clonmel Credit Union
Old Bridge 5 – 2 Cahir Park
Old Bridge picked up a hugely significant three points to lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table with a good win against a poor Cahir Park outfit on Sunday.
The away side never looked like building on a good point last weekend and the Clonmel side were a goal up inside five minutes when Martin Kennedy beat the Cahir keeper with a well taken effort.
This setback spurred the away side into life and they equalised 15 minutes later when Andy Fitzgerald finished off a nice flowing movement to level matters.
Alas for them, parity lasted all of three minutes when Paul Landers struck a direct free kick beautifully to the net. This was how it went to half time, and three minutes after the break, Landers struck again to double the Bridge lead.
Cahir were then thrown a lifeline on the hour when Old Bridge were reduced to ten men, but instead it was the home side who kicked on, and Martin Kennedy got his second goal after 68 minutes. Landers then completed his hat trick with ten minutes left and Cahir’s blushes were spared only just when Andy Fitzgerald scored a late but barely deserved consolation goal minutes from time.
This was a great win for Old Bridge, but a shockingly poor display by a Cahir side who must now fear they are slipping ominously back into the First Division. They will need to pick up points, and do it fast if that isn’t to be their lot this season.
