Commercials have a date with old foes Loughmore

Clonmel Commercials 2-19 Galtee Rovers/Emly 1-4

South Under 21 Football champions Clonmel Commercials enjoyed a most comfortable passage to the County final thanks to an 18-point victory over West champions Galtee Rovers/Emly at Leahy Park, Cashel on Wednesday evening of last week.

Commercials were clinical, amassing a fine 2-13 total from play. Galtee Rovers fielded a very young side who tried bravely all evening but they were way out of their depth against a Commercials outfit in top form.

From the beginning Commercials showed their intent and inside two minutes they led by 1-2 to no score. The goal in the second minute came from corner forward Shane Flynn after good work by Paudie White, whose initial effort was thwarted by Calum Fanning in the Bansha goal, but Flynn was on hand to finish the rebound.

Commercials enjoyed dominance throughout the field and by the time Andrew Vance had Galtee’s first score, when he pointed a free in the 22nd minute, Commercials had 1-9 on the board. Some fine football from the Clonmel side resulted in some excellent scores. Shane Flynn, Paudie White, Kevin Fahey, Richie Gunne, Jason Lonergan and Colman Kennedy were all to the fore as Commercials built up a ten-point lead at the break. Galtee Rovers’ goal came two minutes before the break through Kevin Power.

There was to be no respite for the West champions in the second half as Commercials continued to dominate. Andrew Vance pointed for Galtee in the fourth minute before Paudie White responded with a point. White tagged on two further points before the centre forward goaled in the 16th minute to virtually decide the outcome. Commercials went on to record an impressive win and with county players Ian Fahey and Padraig Looram both missing, their return will add to the attack. Galtee/Emly deserve credit for the manner in which they played. Trailing throughout and outplayed in most areas they stuck to playing football and were hugely honest. Their team is very young and with the experience gained this year they will improve.

Commercials now have a date with their old foes Loughmore/Castleiney in the county final. While impressive last week they will need to be at least as good again if they are to triumph. Down the years these clubs have served up some terrific games. This generation of players have met many times and should once again deliver a final to savour.
