FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round
ST. NICHOLAS 0 CLONMEL TOWN 1
Former winners Clonmel Town had to rely on a Tony Scully penalty midway through the second half to overcome First Division underdogs St. Nicholas and progress to the FAI Junior Cup 4th Round in Danny O’Dwyer Park, Solohead last Sunday.
This was a very close contest that was in the balance right up to the final whistle and St. Nicholas kept their more illustrious opponents at bay in a scoreless opening half.
However disaster struck for a St. Nicholas side that was enjoying plenty of possession in the 65th minute when in a rare Clonmel Town foray into the opposition penalty area a player was ruled by the referee to have handled the ball. From the resultant spot-kick Tony Scully made no mistake to give Town a 1-0 lead.
Just five minutes later St. Nicholas were thrown a deserved lifeline when Joss O’Brien was brought down inside the Clonmel Town area. Saints goalkeeper and penalty-taker Mark Lowry made the long journey to the opposite end of the pitch but the normally reliable Lowry saw his effort skim the wrong side of the post to the dismay of his team-mates and the relief of the Clonmel Town contingent. That let-off saw Town hold on and secure their place in the next round.
