The County Novice Cross Country Championships took place last Sunday in summer-like conditions near Moyne.
It was brilliant to see two Clonmel AC Ladies teams competing. For many of them it was their first time running a Cross Country race and they took to it with great gusto and commitment. Johanna Lacy, back after a lengthy break, ran a very good race and battled bravely only to miss out on the bronze medal close to the line. That was a very good performance by Johanna who missed all of the summer months due to injury.
Then we had Fiona Barlow, more noted for distance running putting in a brilliant performance on her debut at Cross Country when finishing 11th. Then we had Nicola Maunsell also running well when finishing 19th on her comeback as she too missed most of the year due to injury.
These three athletes combined very well to finish a very close 4th team on 34 points.
anna byrne makes her cross country debut
Then we had Anna Byrne making her Cross Country debut and she too should be delighted with this performance, which saw her finish 21st. Another athlete making her Cross Country debut was Gemma McLoughlin and she too ran very well when finishing 27th. We also had Una Redfern running well on her first run for quite sometime when finishing 31st.
In the Men’s race David Mansfield was making his cross Country debut for the club and he ran the proverbial blinder to win the Bronze medal. This was a memorable weekend for David as he also celebrated his engagement.
Then we had Paudie O’Keeffe also running very well when coming through strongly over the final 2 laps to finish 6th. Another athlete making his Cross Country debut for the club was Ian Purcell and he too ran very well when finishing 24th.
He was closely followed across the finishing line by Joe Whelan in 31st place and these four athletes combined very well to win the inter club silver medals in what was a very competitive team event.
There were also good performances from James O’Brien 32nd, John Laste 39th and Maurice Boland 46th.
