Emly’s hopes of success in the County Junior A Hurling Championship were shattered at Dundrum on Saturday where they were comprehensively beaten by an impressive Moycarkey-Borris outfit in the quarter-final.
Even at the half-way stage, Emly looked in trouble. They trailed by 8 points but more significantly they were playing second fiddle to their rivals in terms of quality, as Moycarkey picked off their scores confidently. Nevertheless Emly battled gamely and did not deserve to be on the end of a 13-points drubbing. A goal from captain Phil Kelly helped Moycarkey into a 1-11 to 0-6 half time lead.
Emly’s Pat Buckley, who had been an inspiring leader at centre back in the first half, moved to attack on the turnover and he had the ball in the net in the 42nd minute but the effort was disallowed. What a goal would have done for Emly’s morale at that stage.
Robert Doran had Moycarkey’s second goal in the last minute.
The experienced Phil Kelly and Robert Doran led the Moycarkey attack well while Pat Ralph was very accurate from placed balls. Elsewhere, Ger Carey and Brian Moran were on top at midfield and in a compact defence Joe Sullivan, Mossy Bracken and Gary O’Connell were dominant.
Emly may have been out of their depth to an extent but they lacked nothing in spirit. They were competitive all the way but their hurling did not match the skill of their opponents, particularly in front of goal. Pat Buckely was the driving force with most assistance coming from Jason McCarthy, Adrian Dawson, Donal Condon and Ciaran McAuley.
