Peake Villa 3 – 1 Two Mile Borris
The game started in a whirlwind fashion, and ace striker Noel Kent opened the scoring for the home team with a well placed header. Borris piled the pressure on immediately in an attempt to restore parity and were rewarded after 20 minutes when a defensive mix up let Philip Grace in to score a tap in and draw the sides level. This was how they went in at half time and early in the second period, only a wonderful save by Gordon Carey in the Villa goal stopped Borris from taking the lead.
Borris were left to rue this miss, and the game was effectively decided with 15 minutes left when Kent again put Villa in front with a low drive from inside the area. Five minutes later, Pippy Carroll put the icing on the cake when finishing a Colm Breen cross, to give Villa perhaps a better gloss than the Borris efforts deserved.
Suirside 1 – 3 Cullen Lattin
First Division Cullen Lattin travelled to fouth division newcomers Suirside and showed the gulf in class by winning this cup tie easily.
The visitors opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour when Alan Hayes fired a free kick home, and thereafter took a strangehold on the game. It wasn’t without controversy however, as the home side felt aggrieved by the second goal, claiming that scorer Davy Ryan may have been in an offside position.
Two down at the break, the game was ended as a contest within three minutes of the second half, when Cullen Lattin hit the home side with a quick counter-attack which ended with Shane Prenderville slotting home. Suirside continued to try hard to close the gap, and reduced the lead to two goals on the hour mark when Darren Sweeny scored, but from then on in, Cullen showed their experience to bring the game home and advance to the next round.
