Second half collapse costs Kickhams

Co. SHC Round 2

Co. SHC Round 2

Roscrea 2-14; Knockavilla Kickhams 2-11

A Knockavilla Kickhams cave-in in the second half enabled Rocrea to dig out a three points win in an entertaining Clean Ireland Recycling county senior hurling championship round two tie at Templemore on Sunday evening.

Knockavilla looked to be well on their way to success at half-time as they led 2-9 to 0-7.

An indifferent first half showing by Roscrea left them eight points adrift at half-time (0-7 to 2-9) but after the break there was only one team in it, as the North side, boosted by two goals in three minutes from the 40th to 43rd swept to an exciting win.

Kickhams looked the team with all the talent in the first half. Alan Horgan was masterful at midfield as they set the pace. He got their first goal from a 20 metre free in the 12th minute, and with Eoin Carew, Nigel Hayes, Aidan Heney and Johnny Ryan all showing up well, they fully deserved their interval lead of eight points.

Their second goal came from Nigel Hayes in injury time as he finished off the good work of Alan and Brian Horgan with a well-taken green flag.

Three points from free-taker Jason Fitzpatrick inside eight minutes had Roscrea on the right track.

In the 40th minute they were awarded a 20 metre free. Up came goalie Daryl Ryan to bury his effort. Three minutes later, Davin Flynn scored a second Roscrea goal to turn the game on its head.

Roscrea were now ahead for the first time (2-10 to 2-9), with the breeze behind them and 15 minutes to play, but Knockavilla were not going under without a fight. Roscrea goalie Daryl Ryan had to be at his best to deny Daragh Browne a goal in the 48th minute, and Davy Butler also saw a chance scream wide in the 52nd minute.
